School Uniform

Introduction

Priory Junior School is very proud of the high standards we achieve in all areas of school life. Pupils represent not only themselves but also their families, communities and their school. We therefore ask that pupils maintain a high standard of appearance and wear their uniform with pride at all times.

Children at Priory Junior School are proud to wear their uniform and treat it with care. School uniform instils a sense of belonging and community pride and ensures equality amongst pupils. We maintain a strict uniform policy and ask that parents/carers support all aspects of the school uniform policy, ensure their child is always in the correct full school uniform and mark all items of clothing and footwear with their child’s name.

Uniform plays an important part in supporting our behaviour curriculum and our school rules outlined in the ‘The Priory Way,’ particularly the school aim of ‘dress to impress’. This promotes a respect and pride in our school uniform. Uniform sets the appropriate tone for education, supports our school values and also provides a sense of belonging and identity to our school.

We Dress to Impress as part of the Priory Way because:

  • It promotes respect by showing that we are proud of our school.
  • It promotes independence by ensuring that we are dressed correctly for the day.
  • It promotes equality by ensuring that everyone has the same uniform and shows that we are all members of the same team.

Our School Uniform Policy takes into consideration:

  • The Human Rights Act 1998
  • The Equality Act 2010
  • Safeguarding arrangements
  • The Health and Safety of our pupils
  • How practical, comfortable and appropriate the uniform is for children (including PE)
  • Affordability for families (parents/carers have the option of either purchasing branded logo items or non-branded similar uniform from local shops.

Non-compliance with the School Uniform and Appearance Policy

Pupils whose appearance does not comply with the Priory Junior School Uniform Policy will be reminded initially by adults in school and parents will be contacted. Where uniform continues to breach the policy, class teachers or members of SLT will speak to parents. Persistent and defiant non-compliance with the School Uniform and Appearance Policy will result in appropriate sanctions in line with the behaviour policy.

On the second day, pupils will be requested to go to the School Office to be provided with the correct uniform. Before providing uniform from school, the School Office will contact the parents to request that correct uniform be brought into school. If this is not possible, pupils will be provided with a spare piece of clean uniform to wear until the end of the school day.

Reasonable Adjustments

The uniform policy will be adapted to meet the needs of the children if a reasonable adjustment is required due to a special educational need or other agreed reason. This will be agreed by the school and parents with the support of outside agencies if needed. Written consent will be given by the school to indicate that a reasonable adjustment has been made for the child.

Religious or cultural dress e.g. hijab may be worn. These should be school colours: white, black, blue or grey.
