Phonics and Reading

Throughout Autumn Term in Year 3, children will be immersed in the delivery of frequent, high quality phonics teaching. This continues on from the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ programme of progression, which is taught at our feeder infant school, Phoenix. The programme provides children with a firm foundation for reading spelling and writing. Within the programme they also learn comprehension skills, how to understand what they read and how to use these skills to infer meaning and deduce information. Children also have access to decodable reading books, which not only offers children a chance to apply and consolidate previously taught skills but also promotes a love of reading. In addition to whole class phonics in the Autumn Term, children across the school will have access to a variety of interventions using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to support them to learn de-coding skills; how to segment words and sound them out with increasing fluency and accuracy, as well as recognising common words on sight.
